What this test is

Name (simplified): SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection by RT-qPCR (nasopharyngeal swab)

✔️ What it detects

• It is a molecular diagnostic test —the gold standard for detecting active infection. 
• The test looks for genetic material (RNA) of the virus that causes COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2).

✔️ How it works (RT-qPCR)

• RT (reverse transcription): converts viral RNA → DNA
• qPCR (quantitative PCR): amplifies and detects that DNA in real time
• If viral RNA is present → positive result (active infection likely)

This method is highly sensitive and can detect very small amounts of virus.

Specimen type: Nasopharyngeal (NP) swab

• A swab is inserted deep into the nose to reach the nasopharynx (upper throat behind the nose)
