What it detects
- Detects viral RNA from influenza A and influenza B viruses
- Can differentiate between type A and type B infections (important clinically)
These are molecular diagnostic tests (NAAT / RT-PCR), widely used for accurate flu diagnosis.
How it works (RT-PCR)
- Reverse transcription (RT): viral RNA → DNA
- PCR amplification: detects specific influenza gene targets
Results indicate:
- Influenza A positive
- Influenza B positive
- Negative (no influenza RNA detected)
Some assays can further identify influenza A subtypes (e.g., H1N1, H3N2).
Specimen type
- Nasopharyngeal (NP) swab
What the test is used for
Primary purpose: Diagnosis of influenza infection
- Confirms active infection with influenza A or B
Key clinical uses
- Evaluate patients with flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat)
- Distinguish flu from other respiratory infections (e.g., COVID-19)
- Guide antiviral treatment decisions
- Support infection control during flu season
These tests are highly accurate, with high sensitivity and specificity (~90–95%).
