What it detects
- Detects RNA from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
- Confirms active RSV infection
RSV is a common respiratory virus that can be serious in infants, older adults, and immunocompromised individuals.
How it works (RT-PCR)
- Reverse transcription (RT): converts RSV RNA → DNA
- PCR amplification: detects RSV-specific genetic sequences
- Output:
- RSV positive (virus detected)
- RSV negative (no viral RNA detected)
This is a high-sensitivity molecular test, considered the gold standard for RSV diagnosis.
Nasopharyngeal (NP) swab
- Swab inserted deep into the nose to the nasopharynx
- Provides high viral load samples, especially in children
- Typically collected by trained healthcare personnel
What the test is used for
Primary purpose: Diagnosis of RSV infection
- Confirms whether a patient currently has RSV
Common clinical uses
- Evaluate infants and young children with respiratory symptoms
- Diagnose RSV in elderly or high-risk adults
- Differentiate RSV from:
- Influenza
- COVID-19
- Other respiratory infections
- Guide clinical management and isolation precautions
